Where Strathcona County hiring stands
The County lists firefighter/paramedic recruitment as closed and says the next open hiring will be in 2027. Dates for 2027 are still to be announced.
Between open intakes the County has run separate, targeted postings. One, for Advanced Care Paramedic Firefighters, closed on 2 August 2026 with physical testing on 21 and 22 August and an anticipated start in late September, and it welcomed applicants from outside Alberta. If you are an ACP, watch the County's careers pages for postings like it as well as for the open intake.
For reference, the 2026 open recruitment ran on this timeline:
- Applications: March 1 to 31, 2026.
- Physical agility exam: May 2026, scheduled by any candidate still to complete it.
- Testing, interview and bunker gear measurement: June 2026, with each candidate scheduled for a single day.
- Conditional offers, pre-employment medical and drug screening: July 2026.
- Anticipated start: August 2026.
The County says the process takes approximately six months. Its 2026 competition, number 12540, said it could be used to fill similar vacancies within the following six months.
Strathcona County Emergency Services is a fully integrated service: each member is trained as a firefighter and paramedic. In May 2026 Council accepted the Government of Alberta's Emergency Health Services contract offer, so the County continues to run four ambulances 24 hours a day, staffed by its own dual trained members. Over 250 staff wear the uniform, serving a county of almost 104,000 people.

Who can apply
When you submit your application you must already be registered as an Advanced Care Paramedic or a Primary Care Paramedic. The County also requires:
- A valid Class 4 driver's licence with six demerits or fewer.
- A Class 3 licence and the Q air brake endorsement, completed before the end of the probationary year, at your own cost.
- The ability to meet NFPA physical and medical standards.
- A complete immunization record from a medical authority covering measles, mumps, rubella and hepatitis B, plus tetanus and diphtheria within the last 10 years.
NFPA 1001 Level I and II is a preferred qualification, and the County provides it to successful candidates. Its other preferred qualifications include emergency medical or fire response experience, current ITLS, PALS and ACLS, post-secondary education or trades courses, skilled trades experience, experience with hydraulic tools, pumps, SCBA or heavy equipment, driving tandem axle vehicles on a Class 1, 2 or 3 licence, leadership, coaching or teaching roles, life saving or rescue, a cadet program, and community involvement or volunteering.
Shortlisted applicants produce supporting documents in a short window. The County's list is proof of your Alberta College of Paramedics registration number, NFPA 1001 if you hold it, ACLS, PALS and ITLS if you hold them, your immunization record, any awards, commendations or volunteer records, and a driver's abstract with 6 demerits or fewer and a vulnerable sector criminal records check, both dated within the 3 months before your interview date. Gather everything except the last two now, and order those two once you know your interview date.

The Strathcona County process, step by step
The County numbers seven steps. Steps 3, 4 and 5 happen on the same day.
Step 1: Application
Applications are accepted only during the open recruitment period. The County reviews them on education, qualifications, training and work experience, and considers them further only if the minimum qualifications are met. With that many preferred qualifications on the list, make every one you hold easy to find in your application.
Step 2: Pre-employment firefighter physical fitness assessment
Applicants must pass the University of Alberta Firefighter Physical Fitness test, run by the Faculty of Kinesiology, Sport and Recreation. It costs $399 CAD plus GST. In 2026 the County accepted any pass dated after 1 January 2026; shortlisted candidates still to test were required to complete it in May 2026. The ACP Firefighter posting accepted a pass from within six months of applying instead, so read the validity rule in each posting.
Candidates who receive an offer can submit their University of Alberta testing cost for reimbursement, with a receipt. The County's How to prepare page links a Firefighter Physical Aptitude Test Preparation Guide and warns that the physical is often the most difficult part of the application process, that training months in advance is often needed, and that you should train beyond the minimum requirements.

Step 3: Aptitude/knowledge test
Applicants are invited to write a two hour, in person, multiple choice knowledge test in Strathcona County, and each candidate gets one attempt. You advance if you pass the minimum accepted threshold.
The County leaves the test unnamed. Its How to prepare page recommends the FPSI Firefighter Aptitude and Character Test (FACT) Candidate Orientation Guide, at $15 USD, as a study resource.
With one attempt, do your timed, full length multiple choice practice before the day.

Step 4: The Strathcona County OSCE
The County calls this step medical knowledge testing, and says the medical skill test is based on an OSCE type skill station. It is an in-depth written exam coupled with a circuit of 5 to 10 minute stations, and at each station you speak one on one with a different examiner. The County lists what it includes:
- Multiple choice questions.
- Long and short answer questions.
- A medical scenario with a simulator.
- A history taking scenario.
- Pharmacology specific to your level of registration.
The medical scenario is based on your ACP or PCP status, and the pharmacology is specific to your level. The County calls the testing very challenging and grades it beyond a simple pass or fail.
Practise history taking out loud with a partner, review pharmacology at your registration level, and run full scenarios against a 5 to 10 minute clock with someone new playing the examiner each time.
Step 5: Panel interview
On the same day you meet an in person panel of representatives from the department and HR. The questions are competency and behaviour based and evaluate teamwork and interpersonal skills, honesty and integrity, motivation and preparedness, adherence to authority, stress tolerance and stamina, and presentation and oral communication skills. The County recommends practising your interview skills using the STAR format, and setting up mock interviews with others.
Reference checks are completed after a successful panel interview. The County says it will tell you whether you are advancing; a reference check by itself leaves that open.
The Strathcona County interview guide covers this step in full, including the County's STAR guidance and how the six areas match its values.

Step 6: Letter of conditional offer
Candidates who are offered a position receive a letter of conditional offer. The vulnerable sector check is a condition of employment.
Step 7: Pre-placement medical
Candidates who accept the conditional offer are scheduled for a pre-placement medical as per NFPA standards. It includes the fit for duty medical, drug and alcohol clearance and a mask fit test, which requires you to be clean shaven. The County says the medical is ungraded, and that it is strict about tobacco use, which it treats as a Category A medical condition.

Plan for the single day
The County schedules the two hour knowledge test, the medical knowledge testing and the panel interview on one day, and bunker gear is measured the same day. The panel evaluates stress tolerance and stamina. Rehearse that order at least once: a timed written test, then medical scenarios, then a full mock interview, back to back.
What the process costs
The County publishes one testing cost, the U of A test at $399 CAD plus GST, and reimburses it, with a receipt, to candidates who receive an offer. The FPSI guide the County recommends costs $15 USD. The Class 3 licence and air brake endorsement are at your own cost, before the end of probation.
Pay, shifts and recruit training
The County's 2026 posting for Firefighter Paramedics, competition 12540, gave a pay range of $42.82 to $54.90 an hour, for 42 hours a week. New hires who are members in good standing with another IAFF local can carry over their current classification.
A successful applicant completes a 14 week recruit orientation whose topics include vehicle extrication, fire ground survival, technical rope response, medical skill and MCP refreshers, and NFPA 1001 certification if required. After it, members are assigned to a platoon, take a regular seat on EMS and fire apparatus, and continue a one year probation that ends with a written and a practical evaluation.
Members work four on and four off: two 10 hour days and two 14 hour nights. The County says members spend half their time on the ambulance and half on a fire apparatus, and that ambulance time decreases as they progress through the ranks.

What Strathcona County says about the job
The department's mission is "To protect from risk the things that matter to those we serve," and its vision is "We will lead our community to be the safest in Canada." Its values are Integrity, Respect, Cooperation, Leadership, Community/Safety, Ownership and Progress.
The application process page says the role asks you to understand a wide range of subjects related to fire, rescue, dangerous goods and EMS, operate mechanical equipment, keep a daily fitness regime, carry out complex orders in emergencies while acting on your own initiative, work as part of a dedicated team, take ownership of your actions, and work in hazardous conditions with loud noises, contaminants and extreme temperatures.
The County also runs recruitment events. It held a recruitment information day on February 7, 2026, for paramedics and people enrolled in or accepted into a PCP or ACP program, and a virtual information session on March 17 with members of Emergency Services and Human Resources. It runs a ride along program for paramedics and paramedic or EMR students aged 18 and over; allow up to three weeks for it to be arranged.
