Workplace First Aid Training for Alberta Teams
Alberta first aid requirements depend on the worksite hazard level, the number of workers on shift and travel time to a health care facility. How Alberta Determines First Aid Coverage
Alberta Occupational Health and Safety uses three factors to determine first aid coverage: the hazard level of the work, the number of workers at the worksite per shift and the travel time from the worksite to a health care facility.
Worksites are grouped as close, distant or isolated based on travel time. The required number and level of first aiders can change as any of those factors change.
Canadian Red Cross approval in Alberta
The current Government of Alberta approved training agency list includes Canadian Red Cross courses at the Basic, Intermediate and Advanced First Aid levels.
The Red Cross Intermediate/Standard First Aid CPR C and AED course is listed at the Intermediate First Aid level, and Red Cross Advanced First Aid and CPR/AED Level C is listed at the Advanced First Aid level.
Where BLS Fits
Heart & Stroke BLS is professional resuscitation training for healthcare providers, trained first responders and healthcare students. It is valuable where a role requires BLS, but it should not be treated as a substitute for the workplace first aid level required by the Alberta first aid tables.
If your team needs both, Northline can coordinate Standard First Aid or Advanced First Aid with BLS training.
Employer responsibility remains important. Northline can help interpret the training options, but the employer or prime contractor remains responsible for ensuring the worksite meets the current Alberta OHS first aid requirements.
