Firefighter Recruitment
Prepare for the stage you are in.
Recruitment runs in stages, and the preparation that helps at one stage does little at another. Each stage below has its own page, with the preparation that applies to it.
- 01 Application and Resume Your application has to make it easy for a hiring team to verify what you claim.
- 02 Aptitude Testing Written testing rewards structured preparation, and the vendor varies by department.
- 03 Physical Testing Different departments use different physical assessments. Know which one applies first.
- 04 Interview Explore interview guides, practise with a group or get private coaching for your next firefighter interview.
- 05 Medical (OSCE) Recruitment medical readiness and clinical scenario performance are different problems.
- 06 PHS and Polygraph Accurate documentation, assembled early rather than against a deadline.
Not applied yet? The Firefighter Candidate Starter Kit is free, and it covers the roadmap, the file checklist and a 90 day plan.

Workplace Safety
First aid and emergency readiness training for workplaces and industrial clients, matched to the requirement you are meeting.
Consulting
Training program reviews, officer development planning, SOP and SOG review, and department readiness work.
Pro Board Certification
Advance your fire service qualifications through select Northline NFPA courses that align with Alberta's Pro Board certification pathway. Northline delivers the training and conducts the evaluations. The Government of Alberta administers the certification. These are four separate stages.
- Stage 01
Course Delivery
Northline delivers the program against the applicable NFPA standard.
- Stage 02
Course Completion
You complete the program. Completion is a Northline record. It is not certification.
- Stage 03
Evaluation
Northline conducts the evaluations within the provincial pathway. The Government of Alberta Firefighter Certification Program administers the examination process.
- Stage 04
Pro Board
Accredited certification is issued through that program. Northline confirms the current pathway and prerequisites before enrolment.

Common Questions
Do you only work with fire departments?
No. We work with fire departments, organizations, healthcare teams, workplaces, individual students and firefighter candidates.
Can you deliver at our facility?
For department and team training, on site delivery is available where the program allows it. Tell us what you need and we will confirm the delivery options.
What does it cost?
Individual course prices are listed on the applicable course page. Group and department work is quoted based on the program, number of participants, location and delivery requirements.
How do I start?
For department or team training, send us the details and we will come back with the next step. Individual online enrolment is not open yet, so if you are one person needing a course, tell us which one and we will confirm your options.
How are the fire courses delivered?
Fire Officer and Fire Service Instructor coursework is built to be completed online and self paced, and individual online enrolment for it is being prepared. Department and group delivery is open now and runs at your hall, and where a program allows it the theory can be completed before the practical portion.
Which standards are the fire courses built against?
Fire Officer I and Fire Officer II are delivered against NFPA 1021. Fire Service Instructor I and Fire Service Instructor II are delivered against NFPA 1041.
Does completing a course mean I am certified?
Course completion and certification are separate stages. Northline delivers the training and conducts the evaluations within the provincial pathway. The Government of Alberta Firefighter Certification Program administers the examination process and issues the certification, and its examination and certificate fees are separate from the course fee.
Do you prepare candidates for firefighter hiring?
Yes. Preparation covers aptitude testing, physical testing, applications, resumes and interviews. Northline does not guarantee a hiring outcome, and department processes vary, so preparation is matched to the process you are entering.
