Where Spruce Grove hiring stands
Applications are closed as of 15 October 2026, according to the City's recruitment page. The City says it regularly runs recruitment, posts a competition on its careers page while it is open, and that the number of positions can differ in each competition. Applications go through the online portal linked from that page; the City warns that scammers have impersonated its staff on Indeed and other platforms.
Candidates who pass every stage go on an eligibility list, which the department may hire from until the next recruitment. Each recruitment campaign is a separate process, so a past applicant applies again in the next one.
The City's recruitment page still says firefighter paramedics are assigned to fire apparatus or the ambulance on a rotating basis. From 1 November 2026 ambulance operations move to provincial delivery, and Fire Services keeps providing Advanced Life Support medical first response. In May 2026 the City said specific staffing implications would be determined through the Province's transition planning process, and whether paramedic registration stays a requirement is an open question. Read the next posting for the role as it then stands.

Who can apply
The City says you must meet the requirements on the date you apply. You qualify through one of two schedules.
Schedule A: paramedic
Current registration with the Alberta College of Paramedics as an Advanced Care Paramedic or a Primary Care Paramedic. Proof of registration is uploaded with the application. Out of province paramedics with provisional registration under labour mobility may be considered, but must be fully registered by the interview date.
Schedule B: mechanic
A certified journeyperson with at least two years as a Heavy Equipment Technician or an Automotive Service Technician, who is also a registered apprentice in the other of those two trades.
Everyone
- NFPA 1001 Level I and II. The City says this may be obtained within one year of the date of hire.
- A valid Class 5 licence and an abstract with six demerit points or fewer. Class 4, Class 3 and the Q air brake endorsement must be completed by the start date.
- The ability to obtain and keep a vulnerable sector police information check, required on offer.
- The ability to meet NFPA physical and medical standards, including vision and hearing, under NFPA 1582 Chapter 6.
The City lists assets beyond the minimums: NFPA 1001 already held, emergency response experience, current ITLS, PALS or ACLS, a small engine repair certificate, NFPA 1002 Apparatus Operator with IFSAC or Pro Board, EMR in good standing, and Certified Emergency Vehicle Technician.
On hearing, the City's FAQ names average hearing loss in the unaided better ear greater than 40 decibels, at 500, 1,000, 2,000 and 3,000 Hz, as disqualifying. Its disqualifying conditions sheet cites the 2007 edition of NFPA 1582. Read both before you apply, and see your own doctor first if anything on them applies to you.
Plan the licence path early. Class 4, Class 3 and the air brake endorsement are each a separate step, and the City wants all of them finished by your start date.

The process in an earlier competition
The current recruitment page calls the process competitive, multi-stepped and extensive. The only ordered list the City has published is on an older recruitment page, which refers to a December 2021 registration exam deadline for paramedic students. Use it to see the shape of a past process, and check the next posting for the current one.
Fitness testing
In that competition fitness testing came first after applications opened. The current page names the University of Alberta Firefighting Fitness Assessment and says the candidate pays the fee when they reach that stage. The older page said a test passed in the previous six months might be accepted if confirmed. Book only the test the posting names, and if you hold another provider's result, confirm with the City before relying on it.

University of Alberta Test Preparation
Knowledge test
The older page listed a knowledge test next, and described it as a wide-ranging test of verbal comprehension, reading and understanding written information, numeracy, maps, diagrams, mechanical reasoning, teamwork and community relationships.
Firefighter Aptitude Test Preparation
Medical knowledge testing (OSCE)
The older page listed medical knowledge testing, called it an OSCE, and described it as an in-depth written exam and a series of short practical evaluations where candidates provide clinical assessments, diagnoses and treatment options. The current page leaves the stage out. Check the next posting for whether it still runs and what it covers.
Behavioural interview
The older page listed behavioural based interviews using the STAR format. The current page lists five competencies beside its minimum qualifications:
- Thinking & Acting Strategically
- Building Influential Working Relationships
- Optimizing Performance & Results
- Growing Talent & Workforce Capacity
- Fostering Innovation & Steering Change
It also says your demeanour and input throughout the selection process are taken into consideration in the final hiring decision, and that job fit is one of many critical factors. Build a STAR story for each competency, and treat your conduct at every stage as part of the assessment.

Offer, medical and start
The older page then listed a conditional offer of employment, a pre-employment medical assessment with drug screening, and the start date, and said the process usually took six months. The current page asks for the vulnerable sector check on offer and a driver's abstract at a later phase.

What the process costs
The City says applying is free and that the fitness test fee is the candidate's. It also warns that testing may need travel and that several tests may need separate trips, so budget for more than one journey.
Shifts and probation
The City's collective agreement with IAFF Local 3021, for 1 January 2023 to 31 December 2024, sets a probationary period of one year, which can be extended by six months. It schedules ten hour day shifts and fourteen hour night shifts, averaging 42 hours a week over a 28 day rotation. That agreement continues until it is replaced, so check for a newer one before you rely on either figure.

What Spruce Grove says about the job
The recruitment page asks for ethical behaviour, accountability, the ability to follow complex oral and written instructions, and the ability to work alone or in a team. The City's own values are Accountability, Integrity, Respect, Leadership, Communication and Balance. It defines Integrity as "Courage and support to do the right thing" and Respect as "We treat others the way we expect to be treated."
Before you apply, the City asks you to read its duties of a firefighter document and its self evaluation questionnaire, both dated March 2015. The questionnaire asks, among other things, whether you can work 14 hour night shifts on weekends and holidays on very little sleep. It is a self check, so answer it honestly for yourself.
