Where St. Albert hiring stands
The City accepts online applications only during active recruitment periods, and says the recruitment process generally takes six months. A post on the St. Albert firefighters' union site, dated August 2026, gave 23 August 2026 as the closing date for the latest intake and 15 January 2027 as the anticipated start. The City's own recruitment page gives the general rule only, so watch its Job Opportunities page at careers.stalbert.ca for the next window.
St. Albert Fire Services is an integrated service: the City says it manages fires, provides medical assistance and conducts rescue operations. It provides Advanced Life Support medical first response on all front line apparatus. On 3 September 2026 the City and Emergency Health Services signed a 2.5 year contract extension that provides two Advanced Life Support ambulances 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and the City says the community will keep receiving care through ambulances provided by St. Albert Fire Services. The service has three stations, in a city of 72,316 people at the 2024 municipal census.

Who can apply
The City lists these requirements:
- Registration as an Advanced Care Paramedic or a Primary Care Paramedic.
- A valid Alberta Class 4 driver's licence, and a driver's abstract showing six demerits or fewer.
- The ability to pass the physical and medical standards in NFPA 1582 Chapter 6, including eyesight and hearing.
- Successful completion of the University of Alberta Firefighter Physical Fitness Test, required upon offer.
Out of province paramedics must be fully registered with the Alberta College of Paramedics, as a PCP or ACP, by the date of the panel interviews.
The City's disqualifying conditions sheet sets the eyesight standard. Far visual acuity worse than 20/40 binocular corrected with contact lenses or spectacles, or worse than 20/100 binocular uncorrected for wearers of hard contacts or spectacles, is disqualifying. Long term soft contact lens wearers, which the City defines as six months of problem free wear, are exempt from the uncorrected standard. Candidates must also pass the Farnsworth Hue or Ishihara colour blindness test. On hearing, average loss in the unaided better ear greater than 40 decibels at 500, 1000, 2000 and 3000 Hz is disqualifying.
Read that sheet before you apply. If you are near either standard, get tested by your own doctor or optometrist first, because the pre-employment medical comes after an offer.

The St. Albert process, step by step
The City numbers seven steps. The U of A test sits outside the numbered steps: it is a requirement upon offer, so you can do it any time before that point.
Step 1: Application
You apply online through the City's Job Opportunities page during an active recruitment period, answer the application questions, and upload two separate documents: a cover letter and a resume.
Step 2: Station assessment
Short listed candidates are invited to a full day session that includes Firefighter Aptitude, Medical Knowledge/OSCE and Job Skills assessments. The City contacts only the candidates selected for this step, and publishes the names of the three assessments only.
All three assessments fall on one day, so your aptitude practice and your medical knowledge have to be ready on the same date. Start both before the invitation arrives.

The St. Albert OSCE
The City names the medical component "Medical Knowledge/OSCE" and publishes that name only. An OSCE assesses you at stations, and St. Albert hires both PCPs and ACPs, so practise patient assessment and treatment out loud at your own level of registration, with someone playing the examiner.
Step 3: Panel interviews
The City says its interview format gives each candidate an opportunity to meet with a panel of representatives from the Fire & EMS Department and Human Resources.
The St. Albert interview guide covers this step in full, with the City's values, its guiding principles and practice questions built around them.

Step 4: Reference checks
The City lists reference checks by name. Tell your references they may be called, and check their contact details are current.
Step 5: Conditional offers of employment
The City lists this step by name only. The University of Alberta pass is required upon offer, so have it done by this point.
Step 6: Pre-employment medical assessment
The City describes the medical as a condition of employment and a general physical that confirms candidates meet the requirements and physical demands of firefighting. The NFPA 1582 standards above apply.
Step 7: Start date
On hire you need a clear vulnerable sector police information check. Within 30 days of starting you also provide a 5 year commercial drivers abstract and a 5 year standard drivers abstract.

The physical test
St. Albert uses the University of Alberta Firefighter Physical Fitness Test. You register for one of the University's Open Testing Dates on its activity registration website, and you pay for the test yourself. The University lists the fee as $399 CAD plus GST, payable in full at booking, and says results are typically valid for six months, to be confirmed with the department.
The pass is required upon offer and the process generally takes six months, so plan your test date around when an offer would come, and confirm St. Albert's validity window in the posting.

What the process costs
The only cost the City confirms is the U of A test, paid by the candidate. If you take a ride along, the criminal record check it requires is also at your own expense.
Shifts, probation and recruit training
The City's collective agreement with IAFF Local 2130 sets a four platoon system on an eight week cycle of 42 hour weeks: two consecutive ten hour day shifts followed by two consecutive fourteen hour night shifts. A new hire serves a twelve month probationary period with exams at three months and six months, and a first year examination completed by the end of the eleventh month. Probationary Firefighter/Medics receive an EMS orientation within one month of hire, and work a day schedule during initial orientation and fire training.
The agreement on the City's site is dated for 2024, so check the posting for the terms that apply to you.

What St. Albert says about the job
The recruitment page asks successful applicants to be prepared to travel for recruitment testing, to understand the inherent risks of the role, and to be committed to a high level of fitness and wellness, including strength, stamina, cardiovascular conditioning and the ability to monitor their own wellness. It asks for integrity, professionalism and accountability, initiative and collaboration, and the ability to follow complex orders swiftly during emergencies.
St. Albert Fire Services publishes its values as Integrity and Honesty, Dedication and Community Service, Pride, and Honour and Tradition. One of its guiding principles is "We are dedicated to providing compassionate client and family centred services."
The City also runs a ride along observer program. You must be at least 18, actively pursuing an education as a firefighter or paramedic, give four weeks' notice, and bring steel toe boots, and you sign a waiver and complete a criminal record check at your own expense.

- Have your aptitude and medical preparation ready to the same date, for the full day station assessment.
- Practise OSCE style stations out loud at your own level of registration.
- Build a panel story bank from the City's values and guiding principles.
- Train for the U of A test so a pass is current when an offer comes.
