- The retest policy
- The official preparation resources
A study plan built around the wrong test wastes time.

Calgary currently uses National Testing Network for its fire service aptitude testing. The City describes the current assessment as a two part online exam.

Edmonton Aptitude Testing
The process currently published by Edmonton states that its aptitude test accounts for 40 percent of the candidate’s overall score.
The City lists areas that include oral information, written information, numerical skills, maps and diagrams, mechanical reasoning, teamwork, and public speaking.
Edmonton states that invited applicants receive the test date and time and that there are no rewrites.

Build a Four Week Plan
Week 1
Establish a baseline. Complete representative practice in each tested category and identify the areas where accuracy or speed is weakest.
Week 2
Train the weakest categories deliberately. Do not spend most of your time on the section you already enjoy.
Week 3
Mix categories and add time pressure. Practice switching between numerical, reading, spatial, and mechanical tasks without a long reset.
Week 4
Use realistic practice blocks. Reduce last minute content chasing and focus on consistent execution.
Improve Accuracy First
Speed matters only when the answer is correct.
When reviewing a missed question, identify why you missed it:
- Knowledge gap
- Misread instruction
- Calculation error
- Poor diagram interpretation
- Time pressure
- Guessing too early
Your review process should change based on the cause.
Mechanical Reasoning
Mechanical questions test your ability to interpret relationships between forces, movement, tools, and simple systems.
Practice reasoning from the diagram in front of you. Do not rely on remembering a similar looking practice question.
Numerical Reasoning
Build comfort with basic arithmetic under time pressure.
Practice percentages, ratios, rates, estimation, unit relationships, and interpreting numerical information. Use a calculator only when the official test permits one.
Reading and Instructions
Read the actual instruction before solving the problem.
Aptitude tests can punish candidates who know the content but answer the wrong question. Practice extracting the central requirement from short passages, longer passages, tables, and written directions.
Use Legitimate Resources
Use official vendor preparation material when it is available.
