Where Leduc hiring stands
The City called 2026 its largest recruitment drive in 10 years for new firefighters and paramedics. That intake ran on a tentative schedule from January to April 2026, so as of 15 October 2026 it has passed. The City invites candidates to look for application opportunities throughout the year on its careers page.
The City's Fire Services page, updated in October 2026, says the City stops operating ambulances on behalf of the Government of Alberta on 30 October, while its 2026 recruitment page still describes regular shifts on both the fire engine and the ambulance. Read the next posting for the role as it then stands, because the duties and requirements may have changed since the 2026 description.
After that date the City says Fire Services keeps responding to medical emergencies and providing care until an ambulance arrives. In its May 2026 release on leaving ambulance service, the City also said its third fire station would significantly lessen the impact on its workforce, reducing the need to recruit additional employees. The City is preparing to open that station in early 2027.

Who can apply
The 2026 recruitment page lists role types and a schedule. Check the posting itself for firefighter minimum qualifications such as fire certificates, licence class and paramedic level. The City's Fire Services page says current staff are trained paramedics, a requirement of the integrated service. The next posting will show whether that requirement carries forward once the City stops running ambulances.
The 2026 schedule names full time and paid on call postings, and the page's role list also describes casual work. That list describes a position that responds from home to the station for large events, with a minimum of five responses a month, and requires residence in the City of Leduc.
Until the next posting sets the minimums, keep your paramedic registration current if you hold one, and have your fire, licence and medical documents in one place.
The 2026 Leduc schedule, step by step
The City published four steps by month and marked the dates subject to change. The schedule ends at the interviews.
January to February: postings go live
Full time and paid on call postings opened in the first two months of 2026. The City advertises its jobs through the Workday portal linked from its careers page.
February: aptitude test
The schedule lists aptitude tests for all applicants and gives the month only. Wait for the posting or the invitation before you buy material for one specific test, and keep general reading, math and reasoning practice going in the meantime.

February: medical knowledge and skills testing
The schedule put medical knowledge and skills testing for firefighter/paramedic applicants in the same month, again giving the month only. It came before the physical test and the interview, so your medical knowledge has to be ready in the first weeks of the process.
March: firefighter physical test
Leduc runs its own physical test, described in the City's Fire Recruit Training Package. You wear a 40 lb weight vest, a visorless helmet and leather gloves for every event except the run. The obstacle course must be finished in 9 minutes, walking between stations, and the run is only for candidates who complete the course.
The seven course events, in order:
- Forced entry: a 10 lb sledgehammer moves a 45 lb tire until it has travelled 12 inches.
- Charged hose advance: three lengths of charged 44 mm hose over 30 m, walking the whole way.
- Ladder climb: a 24 ft ladder, feet to the 10th rung and back down, five times, keeping three points of contact.
- Hose carry: 45 lb of hose up four flights to the third floor, down, and up again, descending one step at a time.
- Equipment hoist: one 44 lb section of 65 mm hose raised hand over hand to the third floor and lowered again. Letting the rope slide is a fail.
- Equipment carry: 30 lb and 40 lb dumbbells carried 50 ft, switching hands, and 50 ft back. Dropping one is a fail.
- Rescue: a 180 lb mannequin dragged 45 ft, around a pylon and 45 ft back.
After a 15 minute break comes the run: 2.41 km, which is 1.5 miles, in under 13 minutes on the outside lane of a track, with the vest, helmet and gloves off.
The package placed the test at the Leduc Recreation Centre, asked candidates to arrive 15 minutes before their time, and told them to bring signed medical forms. Its own advice is to train cardio, strength and muscular endurance.
Train the course in a weighted vest at a walk, since the package requires walking between stations and while advancing the hose. Practise the hand over hand hoist and the dumbbell carry until they are routine, because letting the rope slide and dropping a dumbbell are both named fails. Then put the run after a hard session, since you will start it tired.
Candidates with a successful University of Alberta Physical Fitness Test within 6 months of the posting date are exempt from the Leduc test. If you already hold a recent pass, check its date against the posting date before you book anything.

Shifts and recruit training
The 2026 recruitment page gives the rotation for its regular shift roles as one 24 hour shift, 24 hours off, one 24 hour shift, then five full days off. That page was written before the ambulance change, so check the rotation in the next posting.
The City reported that its 2023 and 2024 recruit classes completed six months of classroom and practical live fire training, and that its 2025 class completed an intense program over five months. It describes graduates as fully qualified firefighters.

What Leduc says about the job
The Fire Services page says professionalism is at the heart of every interaction, transparency in operations builds trust, and safety is the cornerstone of the service. The City says it wants people who thrive in a team environment and have a heart for helping others, and it names its corporate values as teamwork, service, respect and leadership.
Plan interview stories around those words, with at least one about safety and one about working inside a team.
Leduc preparation priorities
- Watch the City careers page and the Workday portal for the next posting, and read its requirements before anything else.
- Keep your medical knowledge current, since medical testing came in the first month of testing in 2026.
- Train the seven course events in a 40 lb vest at walking pace, inside 9 minutes.
- Build a run that holds under 13 minutes for 2.41 km after a hard effort.
- If you hold a University of Alberta pass, check it falls within 6 months of the posting date.
- Prepare interview stories about safety, teamwork and helping people.
