Where Okotoks hiring stands
On 15 October 2026 the one open posting on the Town of Okotoks job board was outside the fire service. The Town's 2026 budget, announced 24 November 2025, funds four additional firefighters. The recruitment page tells candidates to check the careers page for when recruitment is open.
Job board copies of the Town's full time postings show windows in January 2022, March 2023 and November 2024, each open for between 11 and 26 days. Short windows leave little time to collect documents, so keep yours current and check the job board often.
The Town says Okotoks Fire & Rescue is staffed by 40 full time firefighters, complemented by Community Firefighters, from two stations, with five full time firefighters on duty around the clock at each station. It answers more than 1,200 calls a year over about 375 square kilometres, its Station 1 crew also responds into the MD of Foothills, and it provides medical first response and medical co-response when Alberta Health Services requests it. On 18 August 2026 the Town announced accreditation from the Commission on Fire Accreditation International, making Okotoks the second Alberta municipality and the ninth in Canada to hold it.

Who can apply
The Town's recruitment page, last updated 22 August 2025, lists:
- NFPA 1001 Level II certification.
- EMR, FMR or PCP medical certification.
- A high school diploma, or a recognized higher education diploma or degree.
- A minimum age of 18.
- NFPA 1002 Pump Operations.
Those requirements sit under a Community Firefighters heading. The Town says its part time staff are certified through the Alberta College of Paramedics to a minimum of EMR, and its full time staff are certified as Primary Care Paramedics.
The most recent full time posting, in November 2024, asked for more:
- NFPA 1001 Firefighter Level 1 and 2, NFPA 1002 with pump operator, and NFPA 472, 1072 or 470 hazardous materials awareness, each with IFSAC or Pro Board.
- ICS 100, with ICS 200 preferred.
- EMR as a minimum, registered with the Alberta College of Paramedics, and the ability to achieve Primary Care Paramedic certification within two years of the start date.
- A Class 3 and 4 Alberta licence with air brakes, with six demerits or fewer, and a licence free of current suspensions and pending charges.
- Availability for off duty page outs.
The paramedic bar has moved between intakes. The 2022 and 2023 full time postings required PCP, registered with the Alberta College of Paramedics, at the time of application. The 2023 posting also required full time hires to live within 15 minutes of Fire Hall 1.
For a full time Okotoks position, aim for PCP. The Town's full time staff hold it, and the November 2024 posting gave new hires two years to reach it.

The Okotoks process in recent postings
The hiring stages come from job board copies of the Town's full time postings of 2022 and 2023, which listed the same five, in this order. Treat this as the order Okotoks used, and check the next posting for the current one.
Stage 1: Okotoks Physical Abilities Test
The 2023 posting named an Okotoks Physical Abilities Test as the first stage, and the 2022 posting a Town of Okotoks Physical Abilities Test. If the next posting keeps that order, be test ready before you apply.

Stage 3: Interview and presentation
The 2023 posting listed an interview and presentation, and the 2022 posting an interview. The 2024 posting listed the attributes the Town was looking for: communication, compassion, fast and sound problem solving and decision making, integrity and courage, physical stamina and strength, and passion for community and the fire service. Build interview examples around them, and be ready to present.

Stage 5: Medical Assessment
The 2023 posting asked for a pass on a medical examination by a practitioner the Town selects, along with proof of education and designation, a favourable vulnerable sector record check, and a driver's abstract depending on the position.
How to apply
The Town accepts applications online only, through its application form. It reviews applications against the qualifications in the posting, makes a short list of the applicants who match most closely, and may run background checks depending on the position.
The 2022 and 2023 postings asked for a resume and cover letter and charged a non refundable registration fee of $150 CAD. Check the next posting to see whether the fee still applies.

What Okotoks says about the job
In the accreditation announcement, the fire chief described the department as keeping the protection of lives and property at the core of everything it does. The Town says its firefighters receive NFPA 1001 certified training, and the 2024 posting listed the six attributes above.
Okotoks preparation priorities
- Plan your medical certification toward PCP, registered with the Alberta College of Paramedics.
- Hold NFPA 1001 Level II and NFPA 1002 Pump Operations, and add hazmat awareness and ICS 100.
- Get a Class 3 and 4 licence with air brakes and keep your abstract clean.
- Stay physically test ready, since the 2022 and 2023 postings put the physical first.
- Keep your documents current for a window that has been as short as 11 days.
- Prepare interview examples around the attributes the Town lists, and a short presentation.
