Where Cochrane hiring stands
The Town of Cochrane career portal was empty on 25 October 2026. The Careers page sends candidates to that portal and offers job postings by email through the Town Roundup newsletter.
The Town has been adding firefighters. Its 2024 to 2026 budget, adopted in December 2023, funded four full time firefighters, and Council added four more, with that hiring deferred to the second quarter of 2024. The 2026 budget summary lists new firefighter positions under community safety. Watch the career portal for when they are posted.
The last firefighter posting on the portal was for casual firefighters. It opened on 15 October 2024 and closed on 29 October 2024, a window of two weeks, so keep your documents current between intakes.

It has service agreements with Rocky View County, the MD of Bighorn, Redwood Meadows, Stoney Nation and Alberta Forestry, and it is a co-response agency for Alberta Health Services.
The 2024 posting said working conditions are governed by the collective agreement between the Town and the Cochrane Fire Fighters' Association.

Who can apply
The Town sets the requirements in each posting. The October 2024 casual firefighter posting listed these minimums:
- A minimum age of 18 at the time of the posting.
- IFSAC or Pro Board accredited NFPA 1001 Level I and II, including NFPA 1072 hazardous materials awareness and operations.
- A valid Alberta Class 1, 2 or 3 licence, or the Canadian equivalent, with air brake endorsement and a safe driving history.
- A defensive driving certificate from the past two years.
- A high school diploma or equivalent.
- Standard First Aid or higher, and Health Care Provider CPR.
- Fluent written and spoken English, and the legal right to live and work in Canada.
- A clear criminal record, or a pardon for any conviction.
- Competency with the Microsoft suite of software.
- The ability to swim, and the physical ability to do the work.
- A willingness to build physical and mental resilience, including peer support and mental health sessions.
It listed these as preferred: NFPA 1002 training, two years of municipal firefighting experience, living within the Town of Cochrane, related post-secondary education, EMR, PCP or ACP registration with the Alberta College of Paramedics, advanced firefighting training, and availability for short notice shifts.
The commercial licence with air brakes and the defensive driving certificate take time to arrange, so get them done before a posting opens. Paramedic registration was on the preferred list, and the duties included emergency medical response.

The Cochrane process in the 2024 posting
The posting set out how the selection was scored. Every stage was scored on a points system, and only candidates who met the standard at one stage went on to the next. Missing a deadline or an appointment for a test or interview could disqualify a candidate. The Town said it would contact only those selected for an interview.
In 2024 the application instructions sat in a Casual Fire Fighter Recruitment Guide on the Careers page, with the timelines for each stage. When the next posting opens, look for its guide and put every date in your calendar.
The posting set medical testing, including vision and hearing, to the NFPA 1582 standard, with a restriction on candidates who have a Category A medical condition under that standard. The Town supplies the clearance form only to candidates who reach that stage, so check NFPA 1582 against your own history before you apply.
Confirm the physical test, any aptitude test and the interview format with Cochrane Fire Services before you book or pay for any test.

Shifts
Casual firefighters in the 2024 posting worked 12 hour day or night shifts, or a combined 24 hour shift, followed by time off. The posting preferred candidates who could take short notice shifts across a wide range of times.
What Cochrane says about the job
The 2024 posting asked candidates to show honesty, respect and professional pride, to take part in daily drills and training, and to support fire prevention officers with company level inspections and public education events. It named five Town competencies: People Matter; Always Learning, Always Growing; We Are Who We Decide to Be; Community Focus; and Embracing Evolution and Growth. Build interview examples around them.
