Where Wood Buffalo hiring stands
As of 15 October 2026 the Municipality has two firefighter postings open on jobs.rmwb.ca:
- Firefighter Paramedic (Primary or Advanced Care) and Non-Fire Trained Advanced Care Paramedic. Open until filled, with multiple openings. The posting says resumes are kept on file for 2026 recruitment campaigns and qualified applicants may be invited to recruitment testing sessions.
- Paramedic, Firefighter Cadet Program. Posted in October 2026, open until filled, with multiple positions. It is covered in its own section below.
The recruitment page adds that recruitment information is subject to change and points candidates to the current postings for all requirements. Read the posting you apply to alongside this guide.
Regional Emergency Services provides a fully integrated fire and EMS service with advanced life support. Its firefighter paramedics work both fire suppression and EMS, and the Municipality delivers EMS in the region under an agreement with Alberta Health Services, which in April 2024 it described as supporting four fully staffed ambulances around the clock. The urban career department, the Fort McMurray Fire Department, runs four fire halls: Downtown, Thickwood, Timberlea and Saprae Creek Trail. It also keeps specialty teams for technical rescue (high angle, confined space and collapsed structures), water rescue and dangerous goods.

Who can apply
The Firefighter Paramedic posting and the recruitment page list:
- NFPA 1001 Level I and II, Pro Board or IFSAC certified.
- Current Alberta College of Paramedics certification as a Primary Care Paramedic (PCP) or Advanced Care Paramedic (ACP).
- Valid CPR, Basic Cardiac Life Support.
- A high school diploma or GED equivalent.
- A valid Alberta Class 4 driver's licence with Q endorsement. Class 3 with Q is preferred.
- A clear criminal record with vulnerable sector check.
- A commercial five year driver's abstract, brought to the interview.
The Firefighter Paramedic stream needs a PCP or ACP permit as well as your fire certificates. For ACPs, the same posting has a Non-Fire Trained Advanced Care Paramedic stream, with a paramedic fitness test in place of the firefighter one.
If you are a paramedic who has yet to earn NFPA 1001, read the Cadet Program section below before you apply.
The Wood Buffalo process, step by step
The recruitment page lists six stages. The posting adds that applicants must be prepared to travel to Fort McMurray, because portions of the process are conducted in person.
Step 1: Application review
Human Resources and Regional Emergency Services review your application. Proof of qualifications is due on or before the day of your interview, so have every certificate and your practice permit ready from the start.
Step 2: Aptitude test
The Municipality describes a timed multiple choice test of reading comprehension and vocabulary, logical reasoning, mechanical aptitude, spatial orientation and understanding job related information. You can sit it in Fort McMurray or remotely through approved invigilation services. Most invigilators charge a fee, and the candidate pays it.
You are told your result within one hour of finishing. Only candidates who meet the minimum competency score are considered for the fitness test. Practise each of the five areas under a time limit.
Firefighter Aptitude Test Preparation
Step 3: Physical fitness test
You need a firefighter fitness test passed within the last six months. The recruitment page tells candidates to book directly with the University of Alberta, and says the Municipality will arrange testing locally through the Syncrude Sport and Wellness Centre if the University is unable to offer it. The current posting accepts results from the University of Alberta, Keyano College or Red Deer Polytechnic.
The Municipality ranks the results and says only the highest ranked candidates proceed to the interview, so train to finish well inside every time.
The recruitment page describes the format. You wear gear weighing about 22 kg (50 lb), including an SCBA that you carry while breathing room air, with running shoes. There is about 30 minutes of orientation, a 60 minute rest after the treadmill and 3 minutes between tasks. The Municipality's undated fitness testing document, linked from that page, says the test takes about three hours and lists seven components:
- Treadmill: a 5 minute warm up, an 8 minute constant work phase and a cool down.
- Hose advance, within 36 seconds.
- High volume hose pull: a 56 kg roll pulled 50 feet three times, in under 90 seconds.
- Forcible entry: a sled moved three feet within 24 seconds.
- Victim drag: 68 kg over 30 metres, in under 49 seconds.
- Jacobs ladder: 150 rungs within 109 seconds.
- Equipment carry and extrication, within 270 seconds.
The same document asks for a Medical Clearance Form completed by a physician, and photo ID. Book your test so the result is still inside six months when the Municipality asks for it.
The seven figures above come from the Municipality's own undated document, and the 22 kg gear weight from its recruitment page. The University of Alberta's information package dated 1 May 2026 gives different figures, including gear of about 23 kg (51 lb). Our University of Alberta test guide has the University's current figures.

Step 4: Interview
An in person panel with representatives from Regional Emergency Services and Human Resources. The Municipality says it evaluates technical skills, communication skills, teamwork and interpersonal skills, and overall suitability for the Firefighter/Paramedic position.
Bring the documents the Municipality lists: an updated resume, your diploma or GED, fire and medical certificates or transcripts, NFPA 1001 documentation, your Alberta College of Paramedics practice permit, CPR certification, your Class 4 licence with Q, a commercial five year driver's abstract and your criminal record check with vulnerable sector check. Order the abstract and the record check early.

Step 5: Background and reference check
The Municipality reviews and evaluates your personal, work and criminal history.
For the reference check, you provide three work related supervisory references, at least one from your current or most recent employer. Recent graduates of fire or medical programs may use instructors. Pick supervisors who saw your work up close, and tell them to expect the call.
Step 6: Medical assessment
The Municipality says all assessments are done by an independent third party provider and reviewed by a licensed physician. The Municipality receives only the physician's fitness to work determination. The assessment includes health, audiogram and spirometry questionnaires, a head to toe exam, vision and hearing tests, spirometry, bloodwork, an ECG, a chest X-ray and a stress test booked at a preferred location.
The Municipality also lists the immunizations it checks:
- dTap (diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis): a 3 dose series, with a booster every 10 years.
- MMR (measles, mumps, rubella): a 2 dose series.
- Hepatitis A and B (Twinrix): a 3 dose series.
- Varicella (chicken pox): titres, a blood test to confirm immunity.
- Mantoux (tuberculosis): a test within 12 months, or a repeat test.
- Influenza: annually.
Check your records now and start any missing series before you apply.

The Paramedic Firefighter Cadet Program
The Cadet Program posting, from October 2026, is a route in for paramedics who have yet to earn fire certification. Cadets are employed full time and complete a 17 week training program free of charge, which the posting says leads to NFPA 1001 Level I and Level II, along with NFPA 470 Dangerous Goods Awareness and Operations, NFPA 1002 Driver Operator and NFPA 1140 Wildland Firefighter, plus HP-CPR, ITLS, NVCI and ICS.
The requirements:
- A high school diploma or GED.
- Alberta College of Paramedics registration as a PCP or ACP, or the ability to complete it by spring 2027.
- Valid BLS, which includes CPR.
- A Class 4 licence at the time of hire. Class 3 with Q is preferred.
- A clear criminal record check with vulnerable sector search.
- Firefighter physical fitness testing passed within six months of the start date.
- A medical assessment in accordance with NFPA 1582.
The program carries a return of service: you must remain employed for three years after you complete it. The schedule is Monday to Friday during training, then 2 days, 2 nights, 4 off. The posting repeats the firefighter paramedic pay rates; ask which rate applies during training before you accept.
Before you apply, be sure you want to stay with the Municipality for the three years after training.

What the process costs
Each fitness test provider sets its own fee. The Municipality's fitness testing document lists $375 CAD plus GST. The University of Alberta lists $399 CAD plus GST, payable in full at booking. Red Deer Polytechnic lists $380 CAD and names the Wood Buffalo service among the departments that accept its test.
If you take the aptitude test remotely, you pay the invigilator's fee. Plan for travel to Fort McMurray for the in person stages.
