Where Grande Prairie hiring stands
As of 15 October 2026 the City's recruitment page says the application process is closed. The 13 postings on the City job postings page that day were all for other roles.
The City says it accepts firefighter applications within a specified time frame, and advertises the position on multiple platforms, with local media and with fire related schools. For updates it points candidates to the City job postings page and the Grande Prairie Fire Department Facebook page. Check both regularly while the process is closed.
The Grande Prairie Fire Department is a career fire service. The City says it is made up of 68 fire suppression personnel, five fire prevention personnel, three day staff positions and 24 dispatchers, and runs three stations: Pete Eagar, Salmond and Westgate. Its firefighters provide fire suppression, medical co-response and specialized rescue, along with fire prevention and public education, and the department oversees 911 services.
The County of Grande Prairie Regional Fire Service is a separate employer with its own process. County of Grande Prairie Recruitment Guide

Who can apply
The City lists these qualifications:
- NFPA 1001 Level 2 certification, including NFPA 472 Awareness and Operations, from an IFSAC or ProBoard approved institution.
- One of three types of medical training, each an 80 hour program: an approved Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) course or proof of provincial equivalency, valid Advanced First Aid, or an 80 hour MFR program certificate.
- A Class 3 and 4 Alberta driver's licence with an air brake (Q) endorsement, or proof of provincial equivalency.
- A high school diploma or equivalency.
Beside the medical options, the City notes that ACP registration falls outside the requirement, which puts the medical bar at the 80 hour course. Make sure the course you hold is one of the three the City names and runs at least 80 hours.
Before you apply, confirm the institution that issued your NFPA 1001 certificate is IFSAC or ProBoard approved, and keep that detail with the certificate.
The recruitment page also names some of the schools that offer firefighter training: College of the Rockies, Lakeland College, JIBC Maple Ridge and Fire Academy Online.
The Grande Prairie process, step by step
The City says these steps take place over a number of weeks. Its April 2022 brochure ran them in a slightly different order, so read the City page again when a window opens.
Step 1: Application review
You complete the online application. Applicants who meet the minimum requirements are invited to the next step, and the City considers complete application packages only. Scan every certificate, licence and medical course document before the window opens, so your package is complete on the day you apply.
Step 2: Aptitude testing
Once your application is approved, you complete a written firefighter aptitude test. The City says it assesses understanding instructions, mechanical aptitude, and judgment and reasoning. Practise those three areas, and read your invitation closely for the test format and timing.

Step 3: Online interview
The City describes this as a chance for its Recruitment Team to meet the applicants who passed the aptitude test. The April 2022 brochure called the same step a phone interview. Prepare a short, clear answer to why you want this career and why Grande Prairie, and be ready for either format.

Step 4: Fitness job specific testing
Grande Prairie runs its own testing: eight job related performance tests over two days.
- Day one: a swim and an acrophobia test, which the City describes as a ladder climb.
- Day two: physical fitness testing based on the University of Alberta Firefighter Assessment Guidelines. The City names a treadmill test, charged hose, high volume pull, forcible entry simulation, victim rescue and ladder climb.
Train for the swim as its own event, and start swimming laps well before test day. The height test is a ladder climb, so if heights bother you, get time on a ladder early. Check your invitation for the location and times.

Step 5: Focused interview
Applicants who advance from the fitness testing are assessed for what the City calls optimal readiness with the organization. The format is a panel interview with representatives from the Grande Prairie Fire Department and the City of Grande Prairie Human Resources Department.
With Human Resources on the panel, expect questions about how you work with people as well as what you know. Build your answers from true stories and spend most of each one on what you did.

Step 6: Station assessments
Qualified applicants work alongside Grande Prairie Fire Department crews for one day. Treat it as a working shift with the crew, and keep how you act on the day consistent with what you said at the panel.
Step 7: Reference checks
The City completes reference checks after the station assessments. Tell your references before they are called and remind them what you have been doing since they last worked with you.
Step 8: Conditional job offer
A job offer is conditional on three things:
- A criminal record check, including a vulnerable sector check.
- A medical assessment with the Grande Prairie Fire Department Medical Director.
- A psychological assessment.
A vulnerable sector check can take time to come back, so find out how long it takes where you live before you need it.
