Firefighters preparing for promotion, acting officers, newly appointed company officers and departments developing future operational leaders.
Alberta certification prerequisites
The Alberta Firefighter Certification Program currently certifies Fire Officer I under NFPA 1021, 2020 edition. Current certification prerequisites include:
- Successful NFPA 1021 Fire Officer I evaluation.
- Hazardous Materials Awareness and Operations under an accepted NFPA 470, 472 or 1072 pathway.
- NFPA 1001 Firefighter I and Firefighter II.
- NFPA 1041 Fire Service Instructor I.
- Current Standard First Aid with CPR Level C.

How certification works
Northline delivers the Fire Officer I training and runs the testing. Each candidate is evaluated by someone other than their instructor. Candidates who pass the required assessments and meet all prerequisites are certified through Pro Board.

Fire Officer II is the next step in the same standard, Fire Service Instructor covers NFPA 1041, and safety officer training covers the ISO and HSO roles under NFPA 1521. What certification prerequisites apply in Alberta?

Department and group delivery is quoted in writing for your roster, location and dates. Tuition for the individual self paced course is published when enrolment opens, and Northline confirms any examination and certification fees at that point.
What comes after Fire Officer I?
Fire Officer II builds on Fire Officer I for officers taking on expanded leadership, policy, program and administrative responsibilities. Departments developing officers often scope Fire Officer alongside Fire Service Instructor and safety officer training as one program.
