Level I and Level II
Level I is the working firefighter standard: personal protective equipment and self contained breathing apparatus, fire behaviour, ropes and knots, forcible entry, ground ladders, search and rescue, hose deployment and fire streams, ventilation, water supply, salvage and overhaul, and operating safely as part of a crew under supervision.
Level II builds on that toward a member who works with less direct supervision and supports the wider incident: coordinating an assigned task, larger flow hose and nozzle selection, supply line operations, foam, preserving evidence of fire origin and cause, protective systems, and the reporting that follows an incident.
The two levels are separately evaluated and separately certified. A member can hold Level I on its own, and Level II requires Level I. Departments commonly certify a recruit class to Level I and bring members back for Level II later, so a program can be scoped either way.
Live fire and practical training
Live fire evolutions are arranged at a suitable host or regional training facility, chosen for your location and what is available. That arrangement is confirmed in the written scope before any dates are held.
We confirm scope, sequence and practical requirements with you, against the current Alberta requirements, when we scope the group booking.
Where it leads
NFPA 1001 is the base of the Alberta pathway. Firefighter Level I and Level II are both listed among Alberta's prerequisites for NFPA 1021 Fire Officer, alongside NFPA 1041 Fire Service Instructor I, so a department planning promotions usually confirms where its members sit against 1001 first.
Departments developing several members at once scope these together as one officer development program.
Where training happens
Classroom and practical work can run at your hall or training ground, a regional training facility, or another location arranged for the program.
The written scope confirms the site, equipment and practical requirements before dates are held.
How certification works
Northline delivers the training and runs the testing. Each candidate is evaluated by someone other than their instructor.
Candidates who pass the required assessments and meet all prerequisites are certified through Pro Board.

Frequently asked questions
What are the Alberta prerequisites for Firefighter I and II?
For Firefighter Level I: successful Level I evaluation, hazardous materials awareness and operations under an accepted NFPA 470, 472 or 1072 pathway, and current Standard First Aid with CPR Level C. Level II adds Firefighter Level I itself and the Level II evaluation on top of the same list. Northline confirms the current Alberta prerequisites before the certification stage.
Are Level I and Level II separate?
Yes. They are separately evaluated and separately certified, and a member can hold Level I on its own. Alberta lists a distinct evaluation for each, and Level II additionally requires Level I. Departments commonly certify a recruit class to Level I and bring members back for Level II later, and a program can be scoped either way.
Does this lead to certification?
Yes. Northline delivers the training and runs the testing, and each candidate is evaluated by someone other than their instructor. Candidates who pass the required assessments and meet all prerequisites are certified through Pro Board. Finishing the Northline course and being certified are separate stages.
How is the live fire component handled?
Live fire evolutions are arranged at a suitable host or regional training facility. Which facility is used depends on where your department is and what is available, and it is confirmed in the written scope before any dates are held.
Where does the training happen?
Classroom and practical work run at your own hall or training ground, at a regional training facility, or at a location you arrange. Northline travels anywhere in Alberta to deliver it, which is often what makes a recruit class workable for a rural or volunteer department.
Can one person enrol, or is this group only?
This is delivered to departments and groups only. If you have one or two members to train, tell us and we will confirm their options directly.
How long does it take and how many members can attend?
Both are set in the proposal. They depend on which levels you need, how many members you are training, what they already hold and how your schedule works. Tell us what you are trying to build and the scope will state both in writing.
Do our members need Firefighter I and II before Fire Officer?
Yes.
