Level I and Level II
Level I is delivering instruction: preparing and presenting prepared lesson material, managing a learning environment, using instructional aids and evaluating student performance against the objectives.
Level II moves from delivering a lesson to building one: developing lesson plans and instructional material, planning instruction across a program, and taking responsibility for the whole of the training a department runs.
Instructor I prerequisites
Alberta lists the evaluation itself as the only NFPA requirement for Instructor Level I. A department can start Instructor I straight away, at any NFPA certification level. Instructor I is also a prerequisite for NFPA 1021 Fire Officer, so departments building officers usually need it anyway.
Build it into officer development
Departments can combine Instructor training with Fire Officer, safety officer training and ICS in one officer development program. The proposal can cover one qualification or the full sequence.

Where training happens
Classroom and practical work can run at your hall or training ground, a regional training facility, or another location arranged for the program.
The written scope confirms the site, equipment and practical requirements before dates are held.
How certification works
Northline delivers the training and runs the testing. Each candidate is evaluated by someone other than their instructor.
Candidates who pass the required assessments and meet all prerequisites are certified through Pro Board.

This training is delivered to departments and groups only, scoped and quoted for each one.

Frequently asked questions
Is this the same as the online Fire Service Instructor course?
This page covers department and group delivery, which is open now and quoted for your roster. The individual self paced courses have separate pages, and their enrolment is in preparation.
Do our members need other NFPA certifications first?
For Instructor Level I, Alberta lists the Instructor I evaluation as the only NFPA requirement. Level II requires Level I. We confirm the current list before the proposal is written.
Why would we train our own instructors?
Qualified internal instructors give a department more control over recurring training, scheduling and delivery at its own hall. The exact role they can perform depends on the program and certification pathway.
Are Level I and Level II separate?
Yes. They are separately evaluated and separately certified, and Level II requires Level I. Level II moves from delivering a lesson into developing lessons, planning instruction and taking responsibility for a wider training program.
How long does it take and how many members can attend?
Both are set in the proposal. They depend on the level, how many members you are developing and your schedule. Tell us what you are trying to build and the scope will state both in writing.

Tell us how many members you are developing, which level they need and your timeframe. If you are building an internal training program and want help deciding where to start, say so and we will work it through with you. We will confirm the current Alberta prerequisites and provide the full scope in writing. Each member is checked before dates are held, and any gaps are listed in the proposal.
