Level I and Level II
Level I is delivering instruction: preparing and presenting prepared lesson material, managing a learning environment, using instructional aids and evaluating student performance against the objectives.
Level II moves from delivering a lesson to building one: developing lesson plans and instructional material, planning instruction across a program, and taking responsibility for the training a department runs rather than a single session of it.
Instructor I prerequisites
Alberta lists no prior NFPA certification for Instructor Level I, only the evaluation itself. This allows a department to start Instructor I without waiting on another NFPA qualification. Instructor I is also a prerequisite for NFPA 1021 Fire Officer, so departments building officers usually need it anyway.
Build it into officer development
Departments can combine Instructor training with Fire Officer, safety officer training and ICS in one officer development program. The proposal can cover one qualification or the full sequence.

Where training happens
Classroom and practical work can run at your hall or training ground, a regional or partner facility, or another location arranged for the program.
The written scope confirms the site, equipment and practical requirements before dates are held.
How certification works
Northline delivers the training and conducts the evaluations within the provincial pathway. The evaluator is never the person who instructed the candidate. Exams and skill sheets are submitted to the province.
The Government of Alberta administers the examination and certificate application. Candidates who pass the required assessments and meet all prerequisites can receive Pro Board certification from the Government of Alberta.
Department and group delivery
This training is scoped and quoted for a department or group. There is no standalone course for one person to enrol in.

Is this the same as the online Fire Service Instructor course?
This page covers department and group delivery, which is open now and quoted for your roster. The individual self paced courses have separate pages and are not open for enrolment yet.
Do our members need other NFPA certifications first?
For Instructor Level I, Alberta lists no prior NFPA certification, only the Instructor I evaluation. Level II requires Level I. We confirm the current list before the proposal is written.
Why would we train our own instructors?
Qualified internal instructors give a department more control over recurring training, scheduling and delivery at its own hall. The exact role they can perform depends on the program and certification pathway.
Are Level I and Level II separate?
Yes. They are separately evaluated and separately certified, and Level II requires Level I. Level II moves from delivering a lesson into developing lessons, planning instruction and taking responsibility for a wider training program.
How long does it take and how many members can attend?
Both are set in the proposal rather than fixed in advance. They depend on the level, how many members you are developing and your schedule. Tell us what you are trying to build and the scope will state both in writing.
