If you are choosing between Fire Officer and Fire Service Instructor training in Alberta, the two pathways prepare you for different responsibilities. Alberta currently certifies Fire Officer Levels I and II under NFPA 1021, 2020 edition, and Fire Service Instructor Levels I and II under NFPA 1041, 2019 edition.
NFPA 1021: Fire Officer
The Fire Officer pathway is built around leading people and operations. Fire Officer I is the first formal officer level. Fire Officer II adds broader personnel, program, policy and administrative responsibilities.
In Alberta, Fire Officer certification also carries meaningful prerequisites. Fire Officer I currently requires Firefighter I and II, Fire Service Instructor I, accepted Hazardous Materials Awareness and Operations qualifications, current Standard First Aid with CPR Level C and successful Fire Officer I evaluation. Fire Officer II also requires Fire Officer I.

NFPA 1041: Fire Service Instructor
The Fire Service Instructor pathway is built around teaching. Instructor I focuses on delivering training effectively. Instructor II adds broader instructional planning, lesson development and program responsibilities.
Alberta's current prerequisite document does not list a lower level NFPA certification before Instructor I. Instructor II requires Instructor I. Both levels require successful evaluation at the level being certified.
If you regularly deliver company training or want a formal instructor qualification, start with Fire Service Instructor I.
Do You Need Both?
Many fire service members eventually hold both, but they solve different problems. Instructor training helps you teach. Officer training helps you supervise, lead and manage. The right next course is the one that matches the responsibility your department expects you to take on next.
There is also a practical Alberta connection between the two. Fire Service Instructor I is currently a prerequisite for Fire Officer I certification in Alberta. That makes Instructor I a logical earlier step for many firefighters building a promotion pathway.
