The three levels
Awareness is recognition and isolation. Members learn to identify the presence of hazardous materials, protect themselves, secure the area and call for the resources the incident needs.
Operations is the defensive response level, and it is where most structural departments sit. It covers analyzing the incident, planning a defensive response, implementing it within the department's capability and evaluating the result, all from a defensive position away from the release.
Technician is the offensive level, for members who make entry, work on the container or the release itself, and operate the specialist equipment that requires.
Incident Command prerequisites
Alberta requires ICS 100 before Operations certification, and ICS 100 plus ICS 200 before Technician. Check where your members sit against it before you scope a hazmat program, because it is the requirement departments most often miss. Northline delivers ICS as well, so it can be scoped in the same program. See incident command.
Where training happens
Classroom and practical work can run at your hall or training ground, a regional training facility, or another location arranged for the program.
The written scope confirms the site, equipment and practical requirements before dates are held.
How certification works
Northline delivers the training and runs the testing. Each candidate is evaluated by someone other than their instructor.
Candidates who pass the required assessments and meet all prerequisites are certified through Pro Board.

This training is delivered to departments and groups only, scoped and quoted for each one.

Frequently asked questions
Which level does our department need?
Awareness is the recognition and isolation level, appropriate for members who may arrive at an incident involving hazardous materials. Operations is the defensive response level, which is where most structural departments sit. Technician is the offensive level for members who will make entry and work directly on the problem. Tell us what your department is expected to handle and we will confirm the level with you.
Why does Alberta require ICS for this?
It is Alberta's own prerequisite. ICS 100 is required before Operations certification, and ICS 100 plus ICS 200 before Technician. Departments scoping hazmat often scope the ICS levels alongside it for that reason, and Northline can deliver both.
Do you accept NFPA 472 or 1072 from earlier training?
Alberta's prerequisites accept awareness and operations achieved under an NFPA 470, 472 or 1072 pathway. If your members hold the older standards, that is normally fine, and Northline confirms the current position with the province before the certification stage.
Can industrial brigades take this, or is it fire departments only?
Both. Alberta's certification program serves municipal and industrial fire rescue services, and Northline delivers this to industrial brigades and emergency response teams as well as municipal departments.
How long does it take and how many members can attend?
Both are set in the proposal. They depend on the level, how many members you are training and what they already hold. Tell us what you need and the scope will state both in writing.
Request hazardous materials training
Tell us the level, group size, location and preferred dates. Include the qualifications your members already hold, if known. We will confirm the Alberta prerequisites, practical requirements, evaluation, certification and price in writing. Each member is checked before dates are held, and any gaps are listed in the proposal.
