ICS I-200 builds on the foundational concepts introduced in ICS I-100 and prepares personnel to take supervisory responsibility within the Incident Command System: leadership, delegation, communication, resource management and the management of expanding incidents. Delivered to your group, at your hall or facility.

Who this is for
ICS Canada scopes I-200 from entry level through supervisory responders, including firefighters, emergency medical personnel, police officers and public health personnel. It is the level a member needs before taking any supervisory role on an incident.
ICS I-100 is required first. For members still to take it, see ICS I-100 and Northline can scope both together.
What ICS I-200 covers
The objectives below are the ICS Canada course objectives for I-200, the level that prepares somebody to function as an initial Incident Commander and to manage single resources.
- Leadership and management: chain of command, formal communication relationships, common leadership responsibilities, span of control and modular development.
- Delegation of authority and management by objectives.
- Functional areas and the positions within them.
- Briefings, and organizational flexibility as an incident changes shape.
Planning around I-200
Alberta lists ICS 200 among the prerequisites for NFPA 470 Hazardous Materials Technician certification. And I-300 requires I-200 completed in class at least five months beforehand, so a department planning to reach I-300 should book I-200 well ahead of when it wants the higher level.
Training your supervisors
Northline delivers ICS I-200 to fire departments, municipalities, industrial organizations and emergency response teams as in person group training. Sessions are scheduled around your operational requirements and adapted to local emergency plans and command structures.
Part of an officer development program
Fire departments commonly take ICS alongside NFPA 1021 Fire Officer, NFPA 1041 Fire Service Instructor and safety officer training as one officer development program. Each component certifies through a different body, and that page sets out which is which before anything is scoped.
Where training happens
Classroom and practical work can run at your hall or training ground, a regional training facility, or another location arranged for the program.
The written scope confirms the site, equipment and practical requirements before dates are held.
How certification works
Northline delivers the training. Members who attend the full course and achieve 80% on the open book exam receive the recognized ICS Canada certificate of completion, the same credential issued by any approved agency in Alberta.
ICS sits outside the Alberta Fire Rescue Certification Program, and its certificate is issued by ICS Canada. In Alberta, ICS course delivery is administered by the Alberta Emergency Management Agency.
Department and group delivery
This training is delivered to departments and groups only, scoped and quoted for each one.
Have one or two members? Include them in the inquiry and we will confirm the available options.

“…played an integral role in my success at this stage!”
“This was my second time applying for the Calgary Fire Department. I made it to the interview process my first time and I did not perform well. I wanted to make sure that this wasn’t the case my second time around so I did my research and I signed up for the Firefighter Interview Intensive Course with Northline.
Working with River was a game changer. His help throughout the preparation process gave me a lot of confidence walking into the interview. The time and effort River put in to making sure that I understood the process and that I was properly prepared for whatever questions were asked played an integral role in my success at this stage!
If you are an aspiring firefighter looking for someone who truly cares and wants you to succeed, I highly recommend reaching out to Northline!”

ICS I-100. For members still to take it, Northline can scope I-100 and I-200 together.

Does I-200 lead anywhere else?
Two places. Alberta lists ICS 200 among the prerequisites for NFPA 470 Hazardous Materials Technician certification. And I-300 requires I-200 completed in class at least five months beforehand, and only that in class completion qualifies, so a department planning to reach I-300 should book I-200 well ahead of when it wants the higher level.
Can one person enrol, or is this group only?
This is delivered to departments, municipalities, industrial organizations and response teams as in person group training, scheduled on request. If you have one or two people to train, tell us and we will confirm the available options.
