Where Red Deer hiring stands
Red Deer Emergency Services provides an integrated firefighting and emergency medical services response within city limits. It runs five stations and includes 911 dispatch. Its frontline role is the FireMedic: a paramedic who is cross-trained as a firefighter after hire.
On 12 May 2026 City Council directed Administration to keep delivering ambulance services through the City's integrated Fire and EMS model, and the City's release on that decision put the service at more than 21,000 EMS calls a year.
The City accepts Emergency Services applications only on positions it is currently advertising. Its Career resources page says postings stay up for a minimum of five business days and close at 11 p.m. on the date listed, so check the City's job board often.
The City's FireMedic pages carry older update dates: the requirements page was last modified in July 2024, the FireMedic page in June 2024 and the About the Job page in October 2016. When a posting opens, read it for anything that has changed.

Who can apply
The City's FireMedic requirements page lists:
- A certificate to practise pre-hospital care at the Advanced Life Support level (EMT-P).
- The ability to register as a Paramedic with the Alberta College of Paramedics. Applicants from outside Alberta are asked to say when they wrote the College exam.
- The ability to hold a Class 3 and 4 driver's licence with an air brake (Q) endorsement.
- Willingness to live within a 24 kilometre (15 mile) radius of the city of Red Deer.
- 20/20 vision, which may be corrected, and full colour vision.
- Unimpaired hearing.
- Excellent physical condition and good health.
Previous certified training under NFPA 1001 is desirable, and Red Deer teaches firefighting after hire.
The two City pages differ on students. The requirements page asks students to give their date of completion, while the FireMedic page says applicants must already be certified and registered as an EMT-Paramedic with the College to be considered. If you are still in a paramedic program, read the posting for whether it takes students.
If you are unsure whether you meet the vision or colour vision standard, get an eye exam before you put time into the rest of the process.

What the Red Deer process includes
The requirements page lists four parts of pre-employment testing: an aptitude test, an oral interview, medical testing and physical activity testing. It lists them under headings and leaves the order and the invitations to each unstated, so they appear here in the page's heading order.
Application
Applications go through the City's Human Resources, on advertised positions only.
Aptitude test
The City says the test evaluates your suitability for the job and covers:
- Word definitions
- Spelling
- Arithmetic
- Geometry
- Mechanical ability
- Problem solving
It lasts about 2.5 hours, the City provides all materials, and there is a minimum passing mark. The vendor and the mark are unpublished. Two of the six areas are word definitions and spelling, so give vocabulary and spelling the same practice time as the math and mechanical work.
Red Deer Aptitude Test Preparation
Oral interviews
Senior Officers of the Emergency Services Department and City Human Resources conduct individual oral pre-screening and final interviews with each candidate, so you sit two interviews.
The City's Career resources page, which covers every City job, says questions blend Performance Based and Behaviour Descriptive questions, that each competition has the same set of questions and rating scale, and that probing questions may follow an answer. It recommends the STAR method for behaviour descriptive answers.

Medical testing
In the City's words, candidates must pass a medical examination "to NFPA 1001." It is free to the candidate and is pass or fail. The vision, colour vision and hearing standards in the requirements list are the ones to check early.
Physical activity testing
Red Deer recognizes the third party physical testing run by Red Deer Polytechnic and the University of Alberta, and you may choose whichever site you prefer. The City lists the modules as cardiovascular fitness, equipment carrying, hose drag, sled pull, forcible entry, victim rescue and a ladder climb, and says you must complete all seven in a specific time frame.
Red Deer Polytechnic lists its test at $380 and about 3.5 hours, at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre, with a 45 lb vest worn for every station except the cardiovascular one. The University of Alberta lists its test at $399 plus GST and says results are typically valid for six months. The City leaves two things unstated: how recent a result must be, and where the physical falls in the process.
The two providers run their own tests. Choose your site first, then train to that provider's published standards.

After hire: a 12 month training period
The City's About the Job page, last modified in 2016, says new FireMedics enter a 12 month training period as probationary employees. It lists ALS resuscitation and treatment protocols, fire science, ladders, hose, ventilation and rescue, taught under simulated on-the-job conditions at a station or the City's fire training facility. The FireMedic page adds annual in-house training toward NFPA 1001 Level 1 and 2 certification and officer and trainer qualifications.

What the process costs
The physical test is the one published cost: $380 at Red Deer Polytechnic or $399 plus GST at the University of Alberta. The medical examination is free, and the City provides the aptitude test materials.
What Red Deer says about the job
The City describes the job as both physically and emotionally demanding, with unique challenges physically, mentally and socially. Its requirements page asks for the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the public, and says a FireMedic must work well at an emergency scene and with fellow employees in the station. The City names its RISE values for every employee: respect, integrity, service and excellence.
Build your interview stories from these. Hold true stories about working with the public, living and working closely with a crew, and handling a hard call, and keep them consistent between the pre-screening and the final interview.
