Awareness and Operations
Awareness is the level for members who may arrive at a rope rescue incident without being the ones who perform it. It covers recognizing what the incident is, securing the area, understanding the hazards of working at height and over edge, and supporting the team that will carry out the rescue.
Operations is the working level. It covers anchors and anchor systems, mechanical advantage, lowering and raising, edge management, patient packaging for a rope environment, and operating as part of a rope rescue team under supervision.

Other technical rescue disciplines
NFPA 1006 covers several disciplines and Alberta certifies them separately. Northline also delivers common passenger vehicle rescue and confined space rescue. Departments building a technical rescue capability commonly scope more than one together.
Where training happens
Classroom and practical work can run at your hall or training ground, a regional or partner facility, or another location arranged for the program.
The written scope confirms the site, equipment and practical requirements before dates are held.
How certification works
Northline delivers the training and conducts the evaluations within the provincial pathway. The evaluator is never the person who instructed the candidate. Exams and skill sheets are submitted to the province.
The Government of Alberta administers the examination and certificate application. Candidates who pass the required assessments and meet all prerequisites can receive Pro Board certification from the Government of Alberta.
Department and group delivery
This training is scoped and quoted for a department or group. There is no standalone course for one person to enrol in.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between Awareness and Operations?
Awareness is the recognition and support level: identifying a rope rescue incident, securing the scene, understanding what the operation will require and assisting a team that is qualified to perform it. Operations is the working level, where members rig and operate systems and perform the rescue.
Does this replace our old Rope Rescue I and II?
Alberta's current structure is Awareness and Operations under the 2021 edition of NFPA 1006. The older Rope Rescue I and II level names belong to the 2013 edition, which Alberta lists as an outdated edition. If your members hold the older levels, tell us and Northline will confirm the current position with the province.
Do we need our own rigging and anchors?
Practical requirements, equipment and the site are confirmed in the written scope before dates are held. Departments commonly train on their own equipment where they have it, because members then work the systems they will deploy. Where that is not possible the arrangement is confirmed in advance.
Can industrial rescue teams take this?
Yes. Alberta's certification program serves municipal and industrial fire rescue services, and rope rescue is commonly scoped for industrial teams working at height as well as for municipal departments.
How long does it take and how many members can attend?
Both are set in the proposal rather than fixed in advance. They depend on the level, group size, your equipment and your site. Tell us what you need and the scope will state both in writing.
