Driver, Pump Operator and Aerial Apparatus training

Northline delivers the three NFPA 1002 apparatus qualifications to Alberta fire departments: Driver/Operator, Pump Operator and Aerial Apparatus.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are these three separate courses or one?

Three separate qualifications with three separate evaluations and three separate certifications. A member can hold one without the others. Departments often start with Pump Operator, since that is the capability most halls need first, and add Aerial Apparatus only where they run one.

Do our members need Firefighter I first?

Yes. Alberta lists NFPA 1001 Firefighter Level I as a prerequisite for all three apparatus levels, and Aerial Apparatus also accepts NFPA 1081 upon review. See Firefighter I and II if your members are not there yet.

Why do Pump Operator and Aerial Apparatus require hazmat?

It is Alberta's requirement rather than a Northline addition. Both of those levels list hazardous materials awareness and operations among their prerequisites, while Driver/Operator does not. If your members are short of it, hazardous materials training can be scoped alongside.

Do we need our own apparatus for the practical work?

Practical work is done on apparatus, and the arrangement is confirmed in the written scope. Most departments train on their own trucks, which is usually the better outcome anyway because the members certify on the equipment they will operate. Where that is not possible we will confirm the arrangement before dates are held.

How long does it take and how many members can attend?

Both are set in the proposal rather than fixed in advance. They depend on which levels you need, how many members and what they already hold. Tell us what you are trying to build and the scope will state both in writing.

Planning apparatus operator training?

Send the qualifications, group size, location and preferred dates. We will confirm the Alberta prerequisites, practical requirements, applicable certification seal and price in writing.

Request apparatus operator training

Tell us which qualifications you need, your group size, location and preferred dates. Include the qualifications your members already hold, if known. We check each member against the current Alberta prerequisite list before dates are held. Missing prerequisites are identified in the proposal.
