Wildland Firefighter Level I training

What Level I covers
Wildland fire behaviour and the fuel, weather and topography that drive it. Hand tools, water delivery and suppression tactics for ground cover fire. Fireline construction, mop up and patrol. Safety on the fireline, including lookouts, communications, escape routes and safety zones, and the personal protective equipment and shelter deployment the environment demands.

Incident Command prerequisite
Alberta lists ICS 100 among the prerequisites for this certification. It is the requirement departments most often discover late, so it is worth checking where your members sit against it before the program is scoped. Northline delivers ICS as well, so it can be scoped in the same program. See incident command.
Where training happens
Classroom and practical work can run at your hall or training ground, a regional or partner facility, or another location arranged for the program.
The written scope confirms the site, equipment and practical requirements before dates are held.
How certification works
Northline delivers the training and conducts the evaluations within the provincial pathway. The evaluator is never the person who instructed the candidate. Exams and skill sheets are submitted to the province.
The Government of Alberta administers the examination and certificate application. Candidates who pass the required assessments and meet all prerequisites can receive Pro Board certification from the Government of Alberta.
Department and group delivery
This training is scoped and quoted for a department or group. There is no standalone course for one person to enrol in.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is there a Level II?
Alberta currently certifies Wildland Level I. Northline delivers what Alberta certifies, so Level I is what can be scoped today. If that changes, the page changes with it.
Is this the same as being a wildland crew member?
No, and the difference matters. This is the wildland qualification for structural firefighters, which is what Alberta's own listed resources are written for. Provincial wildfire crew roles are a different pathway with different employers and requirements, and Northline does not prepare members for those.
Why is ICS 100 required?
It is Alberta's prerequisite rather than a Northline addition. If your members do not hold it, ICS can be scoped alongside the wildland training so the whole requirement is dealt with in one program.
Is this useful for a department that is not in the forest?
Often, yes. Interface fire is about where structures meet vegetation, and grass and ground cover fire reaches departments well outside forested areas. If you are unsure whether it fits your response profile, tell us about your area and we will give you a straight answer rather than a sale.
How long does it take and how many members can attend?
Both are set in the proposal rather than fixed in advance. They depend on how many members you are training, what they already hold and your schedule. Tell us what you need and the scope will state both in writing.
