What Level I covers
Wildland fire behaviour and the fuel, weather and topography that drive it. Hand tools, water delivery and suppression tactics for ground cover fire. Fireline construction, mop up and patrol. Safety on the fireline, including lookouts, communications, escape routes and safety zones, and the personal protective equipment and shelter deployment the environment demands.
We confirm scope, sequence and practical requirements with you, against the current Alberta requirements, when we scope the group booking.
Incident Command prerequisite
Alberta lists ICS 100 among the prerequisites for this certification. Departments most often discover it late, so check where your members sit against it before you scope the program. Northline delivers ICS as well, so it can be scoped in the same program. See incident command.
Where training happens
Classroom and practical work can run at your hall or training ground, a regional training facility, or another location arranged for the program.
The written scope confirms the site, equipment and practical requirements before dates are held.
How certification works
Northline delivers the training and runs the testing. Each candidate is evaluated by someone other than their instructor.
Candidates who pass the required assessments and meet all prerequisites are certified through Pro Board.

This training is delivered to departments and groups only, scoped and quoted for each one.

Frequently asked questions
Is there a Level II?
Alberta currently certifies Wildland Level I. Northline delivers what Alberta certifies, so Level I is what can be scoped today.
Is this the same as being a wildland crew member?
This is the wildland qualification for structural firefighters, which is what Alberta's own listed resources are written for. Provincial wildfire crew roles are a separate pathway with their own employers and requirements.
Why is ICS 100 required?
It is Alberta's prerequisite. For members still to take it, ICS can be scoped alongside the wildland training so the whole requirement is dealt with in one program.
Is this useful for a department outside the forest?
Often, yes. Interface fire is about where structures meet vegetation, and grass and ground cover fire reaches departments well outside forested areas. If you are unsure whether it fits your response profile, tell us about your area and we will tell you whether it fits.
How long does it take and how many members can attend?
Both are set in the proposal. They depend on how many members you are training, what they already hold and your schedule. Tell us what you need and the scope will state both in writing.

Tell us your group size, location and preferred dates. Include the qualifications your members already hold, including ICS, if known. We will confirm the Alberta prerequisites, including ICS, practical requirements, evaluation, certification and price in writing. Each member is checked before dates are held, and any gaps are listed in the proposal.
