What NFPA 1033 covers
Fire Investigator prepares members to examine a fire scene, document it, preserve evidence and determine origin and cause using the methodology set out in NFPA 921.
The program covers fire behaviour and fire dynamics, scene safety, scene examination, documentation and photography, evidence recognition and preservation, witness interviewing, investigative methodology, origin and cause determination, report writing, legal considerations and professional ethics.

What your members need first
Alberta's prerequisite list for Fire Investigator includes Alberta Safety Codes Council Group C2, completed within the past three years. That is a Safety Codes Council course rather than part of this program, so members who have not taken it need to before the certification stage. Classroom and practical work can run at your hall or training ground, a regional or partner facility, or another location arranged for the program.

How certification works
Northline delivers the training and conducts the evaluations within the provincial pathway. The evaluator is never the person who instructed the candidate. Exams and skill sheets are submitted to the province.
The Government of Alberta administers the examination and certificate application. Candidates who pass the required assessments and meet all prerequisites can receive Pro Board certification from the Government of Alberta.

What are the Alberta prerequisites for Fire Investigator?
Three items: the NFPA 1033 Fire Investigator evaluation itself, hazardous materials awareness under an accepted NFPA 470, 472 or 1072 pathway, and Alberta Safety Codes Council Group C2 completed within the past three years. Requirements can change, so Northline confirms the current Alberta list before the certification stage.
Does Northline deliver the Safety Codes Council Group C2 course?
No. Group C2 is an Alberta Safety Codes Council course and the department arranges it. Northline delivers the NFPA 1033 training and evaluation. The proposal shows where each member sits against the Group C2 requirement so nobody reaches the certification stage without it.
Which edition does Alberta certify?
NFPA 1033, 2022 edition, titled Fire Investigator. Alberta lists the 2014 edition as outdated and currently unavailable. Members holding older certification should ask us how it sits against the current pathway.
Does this lead to certification?
Yes. Northline delivers the training and conducts the evaluations within the provincial pathway. The Government of Alberta Firefighter Certification Program administers the examination and certificate application, and successful candidates who meet all prerequisites receive Pro Board certification through that program. Northline course completion and Alberta certification are separate stages.
Can one person enrol, or is this group only?
This is delivered to departments, municipalities and groups. There is no standalone course for one person to enrol in. If you have one or two members to train, tell us and we will confirm the available options.
How long does it take and how many members can attend?
Both are set in the proposal. They depend on how many members you are training, what they already hold and how your schedule works. Fire Investigator and Fire Inspector are often scoped together for a fire prevention team.
