What NFPA 1030 covers
Fire Inspector prepares members to conduct fire inspections, identify hazards, interpret the applicable fire codes, document deficiencies and improve life safety through fire prevention practice.
The program covers fire prevention principles, building construction and fire behaviour, occupancy classifications, fire code application, inspection procedures, hazard identification, means of egress, fire protection systems, inspection documentation and deficiency reporting, public education, and the legal responsibilities and professional ethics of the role.
Alberta certifies Fire Inspector as one qualification with no level split. Scope, sequence and practical requirements are confirmed with you when the group booking is scoped, against the current Alberta requirements.
What your members need first
Alberta's prerequisite list for Fire Inspector includes Alberta Safety Codes Council Group B2, completed within the past three years. That is a Safety Codes Council course rather than part of this program, so members who have not taken it need to before the certification stage. Tell us where your members sit and the proposal will account for it.
Fire prevention teams

Where training happens
Classroom and practical work can run at your hall or training ground, a regional or partner facility, or another location arranged for the program.
The written scope confirms the site, equipment and practical requirements before dates are held.
How certification works
Northline delivers the training and conducts the evaluations within the provincial pathway. The evaluator is never the person who instructed the candidate. Exams and skill sheets are submitted to the province.
The Government of Alberta administers the examination and certificate application. Candidates who pass the required assessments and meet all prerequisites can receive Pro Board certification from the Government of Alberta.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are the Alberta prerequisites for Fire Inspector?
Three items: the NFPA 1030 Fire Inspector evaluation itself, hazardous materials awareness under an accepted NFPA 470, 472 or 1072 pathway, and Alberta Safety Codes Council Group B2 completed within the past three years. Requirements can change, so Northline confirms the current Alberta list before the certification stage.
Does Northline deliver the Safety Codes Council Group B2 course?
No. Group B2 is an Alberta Safety Codes Council course and the department arranges it. Northline delivers the NFPA 1030 training and evaluation. The proposal shows where each member sits against the Group B2 requirement so nobody reaches the certification stage without it.
Is this NFPA 1031 Fire Inspector I?
No. Alberta lists NFPA 1031 (2014) as an outdated edition. The current qualification is NFPA 1030, 2024 edition, titled Fire Inspector, with no level split. Members holding older 1031 certification should ask us how it sits against the current pathway.
Does this lead to certification?
Yes. Northline delivers the training and conducts the evaluations within the provincial pathway. The Government of Alberta Firefighter Certification Program administers the examination and certificate application, and successful candidates who meet all prerequisites receive Pro Board certification through that program. Northline course completion and Alberta certification are separate stages.
Can one person enrol, or is this group only?
This is delivered to departments, municipalities and groups. There is no standalone course for one person to enrol in. If you have one or two members to train, tell us and we will confirm the available options.
How long does it take and how many members can attend?
Both are set in the proposal. They depend on how many members you are training, what they already hold and how your schedule works. Fire Inspector and Fire Investigator are often scoped together for a fire prevention team.
