What the Test Asks of You
A firefighter physical ability test is a continuous, timed circuit performed under load. Research on candidates completing the CPAT recorded oxygen uptake averaging roughly 73 percent of VO2max in men and 71 percent in women, with heart rate near 90 percent of maximum, which is why it draws on the aerobic and anaerobic systems at the same time rather than one of them.
No single quality carries it. Completion time reflects aerobic capacity, anaerobic fatigue resistance, strength, grip and load carriage, and familiarity with the sequence itself, interacting with each other. That is why this is a twelve week progression rather than a workout list, and why the tracker records aerobic and anaerobic progress side by side instead of one number.

How the twelve weeks are built
- 1 Start where you are Establish your current capacity against the demands the test places on you.
- 2 Train the progression Twelve weeks of structured preparation, built around the movements the evaluation is made of.
- 3 Track what changes Record your benchmarks as you go, so the plan reflects your progress rather than a guess.
- 4 Arrive prepared Approach test day with the sequence, the pacing and the practicalities already familiar.
Gym or Home
The full program assumes a commercial gym. The Home Edition rebuilds the same twelve week logic around a loaded backpack, a real staircase, a sturdy chair and a few household items, and maps every test event to its home substitute so the preparation does not stop when the gym does.
Both versions progress the same way and share the same tracker, nutrition templates and movement instruction, so moving between them mid program does not cost you your place in the progression.

Questions
- How do I get the resources, and do they expire?
- Your resources are in your Northline account at northlineemergency.com/my-courses the moment the purchase completes, and they stay there. You are also emailed a download link, which works for 30 days. The emailed link expires. Your purchase does not.
- Is this an official CPAT product?
- No. Northline is independent. We do not administer the CPAT, we are not a licensed test site, and we are not affiliated with the IAFF or IAFC. This is physical preparation for candidates, not test administration.
- Will this guarantee I pass?
- No, and nobody honestly can. What it does is prepare the aerobic, anaerobic, strength, grip and load carriage qualities the test draws on, and rehearse the sequence so test day is not the first time you have done it under load.
- What if I do not have a gym?
- The Home Edition rebuilds the same twelve week progression around a loaded backpack, a staircase, a sturdy chair and a few household items, with a map from every test event to its home substitute.
- How much time does it take each week?
- Five training days in the gym version. The home version uses four training days plus two easy aerobic or mobility days and one rest day.
- Do I need a weighted vest?
- For the gym version it is the one item worth buying or borrowing, because rehearsing under load cannot be replicated on machines. The Home Edition uses a progressively loaded backpack instead.
- Are the test requirements in here current?
- Test procedures and requirements can change. Confirm current requirements with your hiring department and official CPAT testing provider. This system prepares you physically; it is not the authority on how the test is administered.
