What you’ll practise in PALS

Recognize pediatric deterioration early
Use a structured pediatric assessment to identify respiratory distress, respiratory failure, shock, and other warning signs before cardiac arrest occurs.

Manage airway and breathing emergencies
Practise effective oxygenation, bag-mask ventilation, airway strategy, monitoring, and escalation when a child’s respiratory status is worsening.

Assess and treat shock
Recognize poor perfusion and circulatory failure, prioritize early interventions, and work through a structured approach to pediatric shock.

Respond to bradycardia, tachycardia, and arrest
Assess clinical stability, recognize relevant rhythms, and prepare the team for appropriate resuscitation, defibrillation, cardioversion, pacing, or medication interventions within scope.

Lead high-performance pediatric resuscitation
Coordinate team roles, CPR quality, defibrillation, medication timing, and closed-loop communication under pressure.

PALS is intended for appropriately qualified health-care and prehospital professionals. Current BLS or CPR credentials and other prerequisites may apply depending on the course option. Summit confirms course fit, requirements, availability, and next steps before registration is finalized.
Required before your PALS course
All confirmed PALS participants must successfully complete the Heart & Stroke PALS Precourse Self-Assessment before attending their course. A passing score of 70% is required. Complete it early so you arrive prepared to participate fully in PALS training.
You will be taken to the Heart & Stroke website to complete the assessment.
Can Summit run a private PALS course for our team?
Yes. Summit coordinates private on-site training for departments, clinical teams, and organizations throughout Alberta. We can discuss options for delivery at your facility using your own familiar equipment.

How do I know whether I meet the prerequisites?

Do I need to complete the PALS Precourse Self-Assessment?
